India finished day three of the ongoing Galle Test against Sri Lanka on top as they restricted the tourists to 284 and eked out a first innings lead of 178 runs. India's innings folded for 462 after adding only two runs to their overnight total.
Sri Lanka were all at sea when they began their innings with Mohammed Siraj nicking off opener Nishan Madushka for a duck in the slip cordon. Sri Lanka lost wickets in clusters and lost half their side for just 90 runs on the board. India's spinners strangled the Sri Lankan batters and broke the back of their top and middle order.
Manav Suthar began exceptionally, dismissing Dinesh Chandimal with an absolute jaffa. He then removed Lahiru Udara, who looked fairly comfortable during his stay in the middle, scoring 27 with the help of six boundaries.
Captain Shubman Gill pulled off a spectacular catch at extra cover to dismiss Kamindu Mendis, giving Kuldeep Yadav his only wicket of the day. But Sri Lanka recovered from such a slump as Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella added 146 runs for the sixth wicket. Both players displayed immense composure and kept India at bay.
Dickwella was unfortunate to miss yet another Test ton after getting tantalisingly close to the three-figure mark. He was nicked off by Prasidh Krishna for 80 off 115 balls. Dinusha was unfazed by the loss of his partner and scored his maiden Test century, helping Sri Lanka avoid the follow-on. He was pinned in front of his stumps by Ravindra Jadeja. Suthar was the pick of all the Indian bowlers, claiming figures of 4/76. He was well supported by Jadeja, who returned figures of 3/57.
Rain brought an early end to proceedings as the ground staff hurried on the covers, leaving the officials no choice but to call stumps.
