Sri Lanka have suffered a major setback in the form of an injury to their No. 3 batter Dinesh Chandimal as the Galle Test moves into the final stage. Chandimal, who was patrolling the deep mid-wicket fence early on day four, sprinted across to the deep square leg boundary to prevent a shot from KL Rahul from crossing the boundary in the fourth over.

Chandimal dived and saved two runs but hurt himself badly, landing awkwardly on his shoulder. He looked in serious discomfort, clutching his neck and shoulder as the Sri Lankan physiotherapist rushed to tend to him on the other side of the boundary line. He got to his feet after a while and lurched his way back into the dressing room, accompanied by the team doctors. Pasindu Sooriyabandara replaced Chandimal on the field as a substitute fielder.

Chandimal has been taken to a nearby hospital for scans. If the scans reveal a severe blow to the neck, then the hosts can replace him with a concussion substitute in the second innings. Sooriyabandara is the likely candidate to come in for Chandimal as he is the only spare top-order batter in the squad.

Chandimal managed just four runs in the first innings as Sri Lanka got bundled out for 284. He was undone by a pearler from Manav Suthar as the slow left-arm orthodox bowler got one to fizz off the surface and take Chandimal's outside edge.
