Match Overview

England and Scotland locked horns in the 23rd match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, February 14. England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to field first.

Scotland got off to a subpar start as the English pacers Jofra Archer and Sam Curran sent back the top three inside the powerplay with just 42 runs on the board. But, captain Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce rebuilt the innings with a 71-run partnership off 41 balls before the latter was dismissed by left-arm spinner Liam Dawson. Berrington departed soon after and the Scots went through a collapse of sorts to finish at 152 all out in the last over.

England, too, had a concerning start as both the openers - Phil Salt and Jos Buttler - were sent packing by the second over itself. But, Tom Banton and Jacob Bethell stabilised the innings before starting to attack. The 66-run partnership brought England to a level of comfort. Later, Sam Curran and Will Jacks' cameos helped Banton, who scored his fourth T20I fifty, lead England to a five-wicket win with 10 balls remaining.

Player of the Match

Tom Banton

Banton came out to bat when England were in a bit of a spot of bother at 13/2 after the second over. The situation demanded stability and the right-hander, along with Bethell, played sensibly. The duo unleashed after the eighth over and tried to bring the team into a position of comfort. With 73 runs needed off the last 10 overs, England need not take any undue risks. A couple of wickets fell around Banton later, but the 27-year-old kept it steady at one end and led the team to a victory with a masterful knock.

Turning Point

After some early blows, Scotland were cruising thanks to Berrington and Bruce's fourth-wicket partnership. In fact, the team was going at more than nine runs per over and looked set for a 175+ total. But, the wicket of Bruce off Dawson in the 13th over brought about the downfall of the Scots. They went from 113/3 to 152 all out all in the space of seven overs.

What the captains said

Winning Team Captain, Harry Brook (ENG)

"I am just glad that we got over the line tonight. (Confident at the halfway mark?) Yeah, absolutely. We were over the moon with that. They batted really well against our spinners again in that first couple of spells and were getting ahead of us at one point, but then we managed to drag it back really well. (On Archer) He was slamming a length beautifully today. He got his lines and lengths perfect and bowling gas again and with good skills. So it's nice to see him back on the park and doing really well."

"(On Banton) Yeah, he was awesome and that's why he's coming, slid in really nicely at that number four role and looked to take down the spinners like he did today and it came off and he deserves all of that and he's played really nicely."

Losing Team Captain, Richie Berrington (SCO)

"I thought it was a really good surface to bat on out there. Probably the difference for me in that game was just that partnership through the middle, I thought we fought back really well after losing those early wickets, myself and Brucie (Tom Bruce). Probably just needed one of us to go on a little bit longer into that innings so we could get that extra 20-30 runs."

"(Five wickets to spin, was that disappointing?) Yeah, I think we still knew spin was going to be key through that middle phase today. Obviously, they have got some world-class spinners, England. But yeah, obviously our execution was slightly off today, but we still know we've got the players who can play that phase of the game really well. Unfortunately, we just didn't quite click in that phase today."
