India clinched the T20 World Cup 2026 final by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, becoming the first three-time champions and also the first successful team to defend their title.
India posted a mammoth 255/5 in 20 overs as Sanju Samson led the charge with a staggering 89 off 46 balls, smacking five fours and eight sixes, while Abhishek Sharma roared back into form with a blinder, belting 52 off just 21 with six fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan added further momentum to the innings with a blitz of his own, notching up 54 off 25 balls.

In an unlikely pursuit of 256, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs, with Tim Seifert top scoring 52 off 26 with two fours and five sixes. However, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled under scoreboard pressure. India’s bowlers tightened the noose with each passing over, with their perennial talisman, Jasprit Bumrah, coming to the fore again with a match-winning spell for the umpteenth time, finishing with outstanding figures of 4 for 15, including a double-wicket over.

The 2026 triumph has made India the first team to win the title on home soil. With their triumph in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, India became the first team to successfully defend a T20 World Cup title and also the first side in history to win the tournament three times. Meanwhile, New Zealand fell short once again in their pursuit of the coveted trophy, as they continued their wait to secure their first T20 World Cup title.
