The first-ever men’s Hundred auction was held on Thursday, March 12, in London. Sussex’s uncapped emerging star James Coles was the most expensive buy, securing a staggering GBP 390,000 by London Spirit after an intense bidding war.

The 21-year-old, who earned just GBP 31,000 in the previous iteration of the tournament, has enjoyed immense success over the last few months, being part of the triumphant Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the SA20 in its recent edition. Manchester Super Giants, Birmingham Phoenix, and Trent Rockets were in the bidding fray before Spirit stormed in and eventually trumped the rest to secure him.

Jordan Cox was the second-most expensive signing, picked for GBP 300,000 by Welsh Fire, followed by Tom Curran (GBP 260,000 at MI London) and Adil Rashid (GBP 250,000 at Southern Brave). Welsh also secured the services of Joe Root for GBP 240,000, consuming half of their purse for just two purchases after the record Cox bid.

Aiden Markram attracted the highest bid among overseas players, being picked by the Manchester Super Giants for GBP 200,000. Markram is part of two other Super Giants teams in the Indian Premier League (Lucknow) and SA20 (Durban).

The talk of the town, however, was wrist-spinner Abrar Ahmed’s purchase, as he was bought by Sunrisers Leeds for GBP 190,000 amid reports of a potential sidelining of Pakistan players by Indian-owned franchises. The Indian media conglomerate Sun TV acquired full stake in the franchise, previously known as the Northern Superchargers, securing 49% from the ECB and the remaining 51% from Yorkshire CCC. In addition to Abrar, Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq was acquired by Birmingham Phoenix for GBP 140,000.
