Sri Lanka dismantle Japan

Japan elected to bowl after winning the toss in Windhoek, but instantly rued the decision as Viran Chamuditha and Dimantha Mahavithana kept them at bay for 44 overs, scripting a 328-run partnership for the opening wicket in the Men's Under-19 World Cup as Sri Lanka postED a mammoth 387/4.

Chamuditha was the aggressor in the opening stand, notching up his century in 75 balls in the 23rd over before Mahavithana followed suit and upped the ante after playing the second fiddle early on in the partnership.

En route to their record effort, the duo went past England’s Dan Lawrence and Jack Burnham’s record for the highest partnership in ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup history, eclipsing the 303 they had put up against Fiji in 2016.

Mahavithana was run out for 115, while Chamuditha, who was looking on course to become the tournament’s first double centurion, perished just two balls later after a record 192 off 143 balls, including 26 fours and a six.

Skipper Vimath Dinsara then swung his bat to race to an unbeaten 44 off 24 as his finishing touches took Sri Lanka past 385, with Timothy Moore recording figures of 3/43.

Japan made the worst possible start to the chase, losing Nikhil Pol on just the second ball of their response before Tani-Kelly rebuilt the innings in partnership with Nihar Parma (23).

Tani-Kelly did not get any sustained support as Japan kept throwing wickets at regular intervals. However, he stood his ground and notched up Japan’s maiden century (101 off 162 balls) in tournament history, reaching the landmark on the penultimate ball of the innings.

The lack of partnerships meant that Japan were eventually kept down to 184/8, losing the contest by a whopping 203-run margin. For Sri Lanka, Chamuditha had an excellent outing with one for 17 from nine overs.
