West Indies registered a commanding victory by an innings and 217 runs in the first Test against Sri Lanka on Sunday, June 28, at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua. Being 318 runs behind, Sri Lanka were skittled for just 101 in their second innings as it only took West Indies bowlers just 27.2 overs to wrap things up on Day 4.
Sri Lanka resumed on Day 4 on 15/1 with Kasun Rajitha (4*) and Nishan Madushka (2*) at the crease. Kemar Roach (4/51) didn’t waste much time getting into action, dismissing Madushka (2) lbw on just the fourth ball of the day. From the other end, Jayden Seales (3/14) also struck on his very first delivery, making Rajitha (4) edge to first slip.
Dinesh Chandimal came out playing some shots to disturb the status quo, but a relentless West Indies attack was all over Sri Lanka as Shamar Joseph (2/19) dismantled Kamindu Mendis’ (9) stumps and later trapped Dhananjaya de Silva (0) lbw, leaving the visitors reeling at 48/5.
Chandimal continued to keep the scoreboard moving, dealing in boundaries, but found no support from the other end as even Kusal Mendis (8 off 20) lost his stumps to Alzarri Joseph (1/11). Sri Lanka went into lunch on 81/6 with only Chandimal showing some resistance against a menacing pace bowling attack of the West Indies.
Roach enters club 300
Even he returned to the pavilion on 43 in the second session, with Roach finding his outside edge that travelled to John Campbell at first slip. The veteran speedster was determined to finish things quickly as he further removed Milan Rathnayake (0) and Asitha Fernando (0) in quick succession to complete 300 wickets in Tests. He became the fifth bowler from West Indies to achieve the milestone.
In the end, Jayden Seales dismantled Lahiru Kumara’s (9) stumps to seal a dominating victory for the hosts. It was West Indies’ first victory in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-2027 cycle and also their first under Roston Chase’s captaincy after suffering eight successive losses.
Courtesy of a collective team effort, West Indies registered the biggest victory (innings and 217 runs) against Sri Lanka in Tests. Amir Jangoo was deservedly adjudged Player of the Match for his maiden Test century, which he converted into a massive score of 233. Meanwhile, West Indies took a 1-0 lead in the series, with the second Test beginning on July 3 at the same venue.
