India registered a comprehensive 165-run win on day five of the Galle Test to take a 1-0 lead over Sri Lanka in the two-match series. More importantly, they have kept themselves in contention for the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle's final.
The result at the Galle International Cricket Stadium (GICS) hasn't had much bearing on the WTC points table, though. Both India and Sri Lanka were down in fifth and sixth spots, respectively, before the start of the Test, and the status quo has been maintained.
However, the triumph has added to India's points percentage (PCT). Team India's PCT was 48.15% before the start of the fixture, and it has now jumped to 53.33%. On the contrary, Sri Lanka's PCT stood at 41.67 before the game, and it has now plunged to 33.33%.
Slow left-arm orthodox bowler Manav Suthar was the star for India with the ball in the second innings. After dismissing Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Lahiru Udara on day four, Suthar added four more to his tally on day five and finished with 6/55, claiming his second five-wicket haul in as many Tests.
Suthar got the prized scalp of Sonal Dinusha, who played yet another gritty knock and fell just 16 shy of another hundred. Suthar finished with match figures of 10/131. Devdutt Padikkal was adjudged the Player of the Match (POTM). He scored 167 and 44 in the two innings.
