Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named Bihar captain for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been named captain of Bihar for the upcoming edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026. This will be the 15-year-old's first captaincy assignment in senior competitive cricket. Sooryavanshi previously served as Bihar's vice-captain in the Ranji Trophy and East Zone's vice-captain in the Duleep Trophy. He also stepped in as East Zone captain during the recently concluded Duleep Trophy when regular skipper Ishan Kishan temporarily left the field.

Sooryavanshi did not get much game time during the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, managing scores of 4 and 45 in the two innings he played. He was also involved in a destructive opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma in the third T20I in Wellington, where the duo plundered 118 runs inside the first six overs, recording the highest powerplay score in the history of men's T20Is.
