'We let ourselves down' - Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons reacts to humiliating collapse against CA XI

Bangladesh's tour of Australia has begun on a deflating note as they lost their only warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI by an innings and 38 runs. The tourists folded for just 54 runs in the second innings as left-arm quick Campbell Thompson returned astonishing figures of 8/25.

Thompson accounted for Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain. Hasan was the only Bangladesh batter to reach double digits (22).

Thompson, a 22-year-old from South Australia with merely one first-class match experience, wreaked havoc with his discipline and claimed his maiden five-for against a senior side. Off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli snared the other two scalps in the second innings.

Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons is utterly disappointed with the performance and didn't expect the tour to begin on such a sour note. The visitors could only bat out 17 overs in the morning on day 3 and were bowled out before lunch.

"I think the three days that we have had and working on things, I think they have been very good. I think we let ourselves down with the bat in this practice match, and you look at how we got out and it wasn't nice," Simmons was quoted as saying after the game by Cricinfo. "But I think that we have three days to work on what we have to do properly in the Test match, and I trust that the guys are going to put in the work over these next three days to get us where we want to be for that Test match. [It was a] disappointing match, but we move on, and we look forward to the Test match."

Bangladesh were lucky to escape a similar humiliation in the first innings after Mehidy Hasan Miraz rescued them from 110/6. Mehidy scored 109 off 141 balls and propelled them to 263 before CA XI responded with 355, riding on a 130 by Teague Wyllie.

The Shanto-led side has three to four more training sessions left before the first Test gets underway in Darwin on August 13.
