West Indies announced their squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of India on Saturday, September 19. They are set to take on the Men in Blue in three ODIs and five T20Is, beginning on September 27. The selectors have retained the core group of players who featured in the recent home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
Opening batter John Campbell marks his return to the squad after recovering from his hamstring injury, which made him miss the final two ODIs against New Zealand. Ackeem Auguste has been ruled out of the tour as he continues his rehabilitation after undergoing surgery in August.
He has been replaced by Jewel Andrew, who will serve as a top and middle-order batting option. Shimron Hetmyer, who played the last two matches of the New Zealand ODI series in July, has been given an extended recovery period by the board after the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and will straight away join the team for the T20I series.
After the first two matches of the series, the cycle for automatic qualification to the ICC men’s ODI World Cup will also end. West Indies are out of contention to earn qualification for the mega event scheduled to be played in southern Africa in 2027. Hence, they will again have to seal their spot through ICC’s qualification tournament next year.
Jason Holder rested for T20Is
The selectors have also picked some exciting talents in the T20I team, with opening batter Kamil Pooran earning his maiden call-up, as West Indies continue to identify and develop emerging talent ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Pooran has scored 273 runs in eight innings in his CPL career at an impressive strike rate of 159.64 and averaging 39. Apart from him, Quentin Sampson, who was also a part of the ICC T20 World Cup squad earlier this year in India, has also been included, while all-rounder Jason Holder has been rested for the series.
