West Indies captain Roston Chase aims to transform Caribbean into 'fortress'

West Indies are eighth on the ICC World Test Championship table and are already out of contention to book a place in the final. They have won only two Tests and lost as many as seven, while two have ended in a draw in the ongoing ICC WTC 2025-27 cycle. 

Keeping that knowledge in the backdrop, skipper Roston Chase's statement of transforming the Caribbean into a "fortress" may come across as overambitious.

However, if we dig deeper into the stats, they suggest there is some substance in Chase's statement. Under his leadership, Windies have played 11 Tests, won two, drawn as many and lost seven. But the two wins they have registered have come in the last three games. 

Under Chase's leadership, West Indies hammered Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs in North Sound and won the series 1-0. He recently powered them to a 90-run win over Pakistan in the first Test and are on the verge of scripting a remarkable series win.

After having the year last year [West Indies won a solitary Test and lost eight], we sat down with the plan and said that this is where we want to be. And as I said, we're exactly where we want to be. We want to level up," Chase said in a press interaction at the Queen's Park Oval on Friday. "We want to just come into this second Test, not take anything for granted, just go through the processes that we've sat down and talked about. We want to come and execute them to the best of our ability. And look to get that second victory.

"We're very blessed and very happy for the results that we've been having at home so far. But I want to make home our fortress, where we make it very difficult for teams to come to the Caribbean and beat us. Because it's our own conditions, we know them inside out, and better than the opposition. So I think we want to really make home advantage count, and we've been doing that well so far. So, as I said, we're lucky to continue in the vein of form that we've been in, and to take victory in this second game."

If Windies beat Pakistan in the second Test in Port of Spain, they'll pip England to occupy the seventh position on the WTC table.
