West Indies completely dominated Sri Lanka on Day 3 of the first Test between the two teams on Saturday, June 27 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, taking a massive 318-run lead in the first innings. Amir Jangoo (233) scored his maiden Test century, playing just his second match, while captain Roston Chase (194) also scored his sixth Test century, registering his highest score in the format.

Courtesy of their knocks, West Indies posted a massive score of 626/9 in their first innings. They even asked Sri Lanka to bat for four overs before stumps, and Jayden Seales managed to get an early breakthrough, dismissing Pathum Nissanka (3 off 6) as the visitors finished the day on 15/1, trailing by 303 runs in the second innings.

Earlier, West Indies started the day on 271/5 with Jangoo (78*) and Chase (42*), resuming their 103-run stand. The duo had a cautious start to the day, before Chase brought up his half-century with a boundary. At the other end, Jangoo also brought up his maiden Test century, playing just his third innings. 

The duo brought up their 150-run stand, helping West Indies gain a first innings lead. Jangoo and Chase batted through the first session, without much trouble, as West Indies went in to lunch on 356/5. In the second session, Jangoo began freeing up his arms and launched Sonal Dinusha for a maximum.

Roston Chase scores century after 54 innings

The duo extended their stand to 214 runs, setting a new record for the highest partnership for the West Indies for any wicket against Sri Lanka in Tests. At the other end, Chase brought up his sixth Test century after a long wait of 54 innings, bringing the entire dressing room to its feet as they ecstatically celebrated their skipper’s milestone.

Following his century, Chase shifted gears and completed a 300-run partnership for the sixth wicket alongside Jangoo. The duo batted out another session without losing their wickets, and the hosts went into tea on 492/5, leading by 184 runs.

West Indies score 500 after 13 years

The third session brought with it several milestones as West Indies crossed the 500-mark in Tests for the first time since 2013, while Chase surpassed the 150-run mark for the first time in his Test career.

At the other end, Jangoo continued to impress with his composure and brought up his maiden double century in Tests. Sri Lanka finally got the breakthrough late in the day as Milan Rathnayake (5/124) found the leading edge of Jangoo’s bat, which was safely pouched by Kusal Mendis behind the stumps.

It brought to an end the marathon 401-run partnership between the youngster and Roston Chase for the sixth wicket. Chase also fell, while trying to get to his maiden double hundred quickly, dragging a delivery from Sonal Dinusha (2/234), back onto his stumps. West Indies eventually declared their innings on 626/9, being firmly in control of the Test match.
