England continued their winning run in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, with a four-wicket victory over Ireland on Tuesday, June 16, at The Rose Bowl, Southampton. After being put in to bat first, Ireland were restricted to 118/9 in their allotted 20 overs as Sophie Ecclestone scalped a three-wicket haul, while Danielle Gibson (2/10, 2 overs) and Charlotte Dean (2/11) chipped in with two wickets each.
In reply, England faced some hiccups in the run chase, but the calm heads of captain Nat Sciver Brunt and former skipper Heather Knight (26* off 23) took them over the line in 17.3 overs. For Ireland, Orla Prendergast (2/17) and Aimee Maguire (2/23) picked up two wickets each, to give a major scare to the hosts.

Meanwhile, following their win, England maintained top position in the Group B points table. On the other hand, Ireland are still searching for their first win.

Player of the Match
Sophie Ecclestone was deservedly adjudged Player of the Match for her stellar bowling performance. She first got Rebecca Stokell (9 off 14) stumped, and later got rid of Arlene Kelly and Cara Murray in the penultimate over of the innings to finish with figures of 3/22 in four overs.
Turning Point
England were in a spot of bother during their run chase after being reduced to 35/3 in 5.4 overs. Seeing their team in trouble, the experienced heads of Nat Sciver Brunt (48 off 37) and Heather Knight (26 off 23) stitched a crucial 64-run stand for the fourth wicket off 49 balls to calm the nerves in the dressing room. Their partnership became a huge turning point in the match.
What did the captains say:
Winning Captain, Nat Sciver-Brunt (England women):
Really happy. Obviously two very different looking games, but yeah, got over the line, so we're happy. I think the way the bowlers just took the game on. We took wickets throughout the innings as well to really stop any momentum. We knew they had some players that could really take the game away from us, and the surface was really good. The outfield was quick, so yeah, I suppose we really wanted to control those areas and did that really well (On things that pleased her today). Yeah, just for caution. Yeah, I felt a bit tightness in my calf, so I thought I'd better not push it. Next time would wait two more runs. Just a precautionary measure (On her being retired out). We can't take any game lightly, really. We've found that in the previous T20 World Cups when it came down to net run rates. So yeah, obviously, we need to be switched on to those sorts of things, but yeah, hopefully we can keep going.
Losing Captain, Gaby Lewis (Ireland women):
Yeah, we obviously knew that it was under par. You know, close to 150 would have helped. But yeah, I mean that last over, obviously, helped us over our total. So the two girls out there, especially Louise Little, but yeah, obviously it was under par. So yeah, look, overall, proud of the girls. Yeah, I think it's our batting. Losing three wickets in the powerplay. That's something that we need to rectify. And then just, I guess, that builds a platform for the girls in the middle to really flourish there. So bowling, I think, is really good. Our energy in the field today was brilliant. And yeah, if we can carry those positives forward to Friday, I'll be happy. I think, you know, we've just got to focus on the positives in tournaments like this and keep building. Especially with the ball, you know, you'll name McGuire coming in, just so much energy and just wants to learn and learn and never again that she plays against top nations like England, she's just going to get better and better. I think first game under lights as well, so that's different for the girls. Some of the girls haven't even played under lights before. So learning every day and yeah, looking forward to that game on Friday.
