After a disappointing loss to RCB on Friday, Mumbai Indians roared back to form and defeated Delhi Capitals at the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday (January 10) by 50 runs to kickstart their title defense in the ongoing WPL.

Harmanpreet Kaur was unlucky with the coin flip twice in a row but made the most of the batting conditions after being asked to set a total by Delhi's captain Jemimah Rodrigues.

Amelia Kerr's nightmare with willow in hand continued as she bagged a golden duck after being asked to open again as Hayley Matthews missed her second game in a row. Gunalan Kamalini added 49 for the second wicket with Nat Sciver-Brunt but couldn't convert her start (16 off 19) into a big one.

Harmanpreet and Sciver-Brunt prevented further damage as they added 66 runs and laid the foundation for a big total. Sciver-Brunt hammered 13 fours during her 70-run knock at a strike rate of 152.17 and adopted risk-averse methods.

Player of the Match (POTM) Harmanpreet remained unbeaten and finished on 74 off 42 balls, with the help of eight boundaries and three maximums, to ensure Mumbai finished at 195 for the loss of four wickets.

Nicola Carey provided the finishing firepower required as she powered her way to 21 off 12 at a strike rate of 175.00. Delhi missed out on their promising start with the ball, and Nandini Sharma emerged as their most impressive bowler, claiming 2/26.

In reply, Delhi's chase never got the impetus it needed. Sciver-Brunt got Lizelle Lee to dent them on the first ball of the third over. Carey (3/37) cleaned up both Shafali Verma and Laura Wolvaardt in her fifth over with her potent inswingers to deflate Delhi's chase.

Chinelle Henry was the only Delhi batter who took the attack to Mumbai bowlers, but her lone hand could only reduce the margin of the defeat at the end. Henry batted at a strike rate of 169.69, scoring 56 off 33 balls, and threw as many punches as she could. Kerr also claimed a three-fer (3/24) and was able to put her disappointing run with the bat in hand behind herself.
