The clash that never fails to capture the attention of the entire cricketing fraternity is back as arch-rivals India and Pakistan will lock horns in the gold medal match of the men’s cricket event at the Asian Games 2026 on Saturday, October 3. Both teams sealed their spots in the final, with comfortable victories in their respective semi-final fixtures.
While India blew away Sri Lanka by 124 runs, bundling them out for 45 - the joint-lowest score by a full-member team in T20Is - Pakistan had some hiccups in their semi-final against Bangladesh.
They were reduced to 53/4 in 6.1 overs chasing 112 in the rain-curtailed 13-over fixture, before Hasan Nawaz (27* off 22) and Abdul Samad (30* off 15) took their team over the line with an unbeaten 59-run stand off 32 balls.
Given India’s dominant record over Pakistan in T20Is (14-3) and their current form, they will head into the fixture as favourites to secure a gold medal finish. To make matters worse for the Men in Green, they have lost their last six T20I matches on the trot against the World Champions.
However, underestimating them would be a cardinal sin, as Pakistan are known to punch above their weight when least expected, holding the reputation of being ‘unpredictables’ in international cricket. While India will go into the final as favourites, there are several factors why they need to be wary of underdog Pakistan in the big final.
No baggage from the past
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have sent a second-string squad to the Asian Games with Sahibzada Farhan leading the team. While the absence of big stars like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, among others leaves them without experience, it could well be a blessing in disguise.
With many players who haven’t faced umpteen losses against India in recent times and the exuberance of youth not carrying any undue pressure, this could well be the gamechanger for Pakistan in the all-important encounter.
Pressure has been the biggest enemy for Pakistan in their fixtures against India as they’ve often faltered under it. The absence of it in the upcoming game will give the entire team wings to fly like never before.
Unfamiliar conditions
Thanks to rain, both teams have played just one match each at Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin so far. The conditions haven’t been the most favourable for batting, with players from both sides struggling on the surface that has been conducive to spin.
India in particular are coming into the event after playing on the high-scoring venue in Delhi in the recent series against Afghanistan. They were also seen struggling on the spinning pitch in the one-off T20I against Japan.
Hence, some disciplined bowling from the Pakistan camp can leave Indian batters befuddled, who’re often seen losing patience when the runs don’t come at a canter in the shortest format.
The Surprise factor
With many new names featuring in the Pakistan side, India could well be caught off guard in terms of their preparation. The Men in Blue have a history of faltering against unknown names in big matches. Both Sufyan Moqim (3/26, 3 overs) and Arafat Minhas (2/23, 3 overs) managed to get good purchase out of the slow surface in the first semi-final.
While Moqim has played just one T20I against India, Minhas is yet to feature in one. The novelty factor could also bode well for Pakistan, who will be up against the most dangerous batting lineup in the world.
All in all, the contest that seems lopsided in India’s favour can also pan out a lot differently than expected. Pakistan’s mercurial nature will be on show in the summit clash. Like every India vs Pakistan fixture, only one question surrounds the fixture: which Pakistan will turn up in the final?
