The first round of IPL’s El Clásico went emphatically Chennai Super Kings’ way, as they handed Mumbai Indians their heaviest defeat in terms of runs, a 103‑run drubbing at Wankhede. Yet, neither CSK nor MI have played anywhere near their potential this season. Both languish in the bottom half of the table, still technically in control of their playoff fate, but dangerously close to losing it.
This rivalry has always been about bragging rights, about staking claim to the “best team in the competition” tag. But this time, beneath the surface, lie battles within battles: reputations to safeguard, and a spin challenge that could decide who laughs last at Chepauk.

A battle to safeguard reputation
Jasprit Bumrah
For the first time in his IPL career, Bumrah has needed defending.
“He has still been a No. 1 bowler for Mumbai Indians and India over a period of time. I just feel that sometimes we can cut some slack to us cricketers sometimes because, we are unfortunate to always be in the public eye so when we do bad, it’s always been highlighted,” said MI's batting coach Kieron Pollard on the eve of the match.
That quote alone tells us how difficult this season has been for Bumrah. Against SRH in Match 41, he conceded 32 runs in his two powerplay overs, the most he has ever leaked in that phase. He finished with none for 54, his third most expensive spell in the IPL.
Across the season, he has given away 264 runs in 30 overs, at an economy of 8.80. More disheartening is his bowling average: 132.00, meaning he has conceded 132 runs for every wicket taken.
Suryakumar Yadav
The batting talisman has looked a shadow of himself. Averaging just 20.25, his lowest ever for MI. He has managed only 162 runs in eight games at a strike rate of 140.86. Since rejoining MI in 2018, he has never scored fewer than 300 runs in a season. His previous worst average was 22.64 in 2021. This year, he has yet to find a rhythm.
Trent Boult
Boult’s reputation as a powerplay specialist is under strain. In six overs with the new ball this season, he has gone wicketless, conceding 85 runs at an economy of 14.16. For a bowler who built his IPL legacy on early breakthroughs, this is a worrying trend.
Ruturaj Gaikwad
CSK’s captain is enduring a season to forget. With just 178 runs in eight games at 25.42, his numbers pale against his career average of 38.84. His strike rate of 121.08 is well below the blistering tempo set by other batters this season. For a player who has been CSK’s batting anchor, this slump is glaring.
For all these names, the second round of the El Clásico offers a precious opportunity: to prove that their numbers are not the true reflection of their class, and to reclaim reputations under the spotlight at Chepauk.
Who will ace the spin challenge?
When CSK and MI last met at Wankhede, spin was the decisive factor. Akeal Hosein (4/17) and Noor Ahmad (2/24) ripped through MI’s batting, leaving them clueless. Now, back at Chepauk, the duo will relish the chance to torment MI again.
But MI have quietly assembled their own spin arsenal. Allah Ghazanfar, the mystery spinner, is their leading wicket‑taker this season with 10 wickets in six matches, conceding at 9.40 per over.
Then there’s Will Jacks, a more than handy off‑break bowler. England trusted him enough to play him ahead of Shoaib Bashir in the Ashes. MI skipper Hardik Pandya erred against SRH by introducing him in the third over instead of straightaway when the openers were tentative. If used wisely against CSK, Jacks could be a potent weapon.
The spin battle is layered: CSK’s proven duo versus MI’s emerging combination. The team that handles spin better on the night will not only take the points but also the bragging rights of having the last laugh this season.
The stakes at Chepauk
This El Clásico is more than just another fixture. It is reputations on the line, and a spin challenge that could define the evening. For Bumrah, SKY, Boult, and Gaikwad, it is a chance to silence critics. For Hosein, Noor, Ghazanfar, and Jacks, it is an opportunity to seize the spotlight.
At Chepauk, the battle within the battle will decide who emerges with pride intact, and who leaves with questions unanswered.
