Delhi Capitals (DC) remain one of three franchises who are yet to win the Indian Premier League trophy. Out of the 18 editions, the team has made it to the playoffs on six occasions and been a finalist only once in 2020. Over the years, the franchise has inducted several superstars of the game but a title victory has remained elusive.
Ahead of the 2025 season, the team management appointed Axar Patel as the captain and the franchise had a rollicking start to their campaign, winning five of the first six matches before losing their way and finishing fifth on the points table missing the playoffs by a spot. The team faltered at the crucial moments and failed to click as a unit, leading to another familiar season. But, the think-tank has assembled a strong squad on paper for the 2026 edition and the team is expected to put a first-rate performance.

Strengths
Power-packed top order
KL Rahul, Pathum Nissanka, Prithvi Shaw for the opening slots and Karun Nair and Abishek Porel as potential number threes make it one of the most formidable top-orders in the tournament. As a matter of fact, dashing England opener Ben Duckett who was bought for INR 20 million at the mini-auction, pulled out at the last minute. The southpaw's presence would have given the franchise more options and strength but even without it, the top deck is still quite strong.
Formidable overseas pace stocks
Lungi Ngidi, Dushmantha Chameera, Kyle Jamieson and Mitchell Starc make up the overseas pace options which are at the team management's disposal. All the four are proven performers, with the first three in decent form. Starc, however, is currently awaiting NOC from Cricket Australia as the pacer is following the workload management plan. It is not clear when the Australian would be available but whenever he does it would boost the pace stocks substantially.
Weaknesses
Scanty all-rounder experience
Although the usefulness of having an all-rounder in the XI has diminished after the introduction of the Impact Sub rule in 2023, there is still a necessity of a few game-changing ones. Captain Axar Patel is the only proper, experienced all-rounder while Ajay Mandal is brand-new to the IPL. Starc can be considered an all-rounder due to his handy batting abilities, but again the 36-year-old's availability has a question mark attached to it. Overall, the all-rounders' department is sparse on experience.
Thin specialist spin coverage
Kuldeep Yadav, Vipraj Nigam, and Tripurna Vijay are the three specialist spinners on the roster. Notably, Vipraj was impressive in his first season last year, picking up 11 wickets in 14 matches while Tripurna is uncapped at the IPL level. On the other hand, Kuldeep does not need any introduction as the Chinaman is a proven spinner on the international stage. All in all, the trio of specialists lack the desired amount of experience collectively and in case Axar and Kuldeep have an off day together, the onus will fall on the emerging talents.
Opportunities
Despite the absence of Duckett and lack of availability of Starc in the initial phase, the squad looks strong enough to impose challenges. KL Rahul at the top, Nitish Rana in the middle, Tristan Stubbs and David Miller as the finishers make up a powerful batting engine while the X-factor of Auqib Nabi, Kuldeep Yadav's guile, and Lungi Ngidi's canny slower balls add variety to the bowling attack. On the whole, there is a good amount of experience and so it means another golden opportunity to create history.
Threats
One of the aspects that the team management would be wary of is the likelihood of being over-reliant on overseas and capped India players. In case of injuries to some of those players or lack of form, the balance of the team can go awry putting the spotlight on the uncapped Indian talent to blaze their own trail.
Another element that the management would need to take care of is the mindset of the group. When the team has not tasted success in the form of a title, it needs more motivation and guidance at different stages to shirk off the psychological baggage which could prove to be detrimental if not handled properly.
