Mumbai Indians (MI) have been a powerhouse of the Indian Premier League (IPL), sporting five trophies which is the joint-highest with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The team has produced incredible performances over the years, winning several matches with both bat and ball out of hopeless situations. Dominating and winning against the franchise is a big deal for other teams and there is always an expectation of high-voltage action when MI take the field.
The aura of invincibility has, however, faded in the recent times. The franchise's last title came in the year 2020 and since then it has been a topsy-turvy journey for the Mumbai-based team. So much so that the team has finished at the bottom of the points table twice in the last five seasons, an occurrence that never transpired before. But, the 2026 season promises to be a much better one as the squad looks more balanced on paper than in the past couple of seasons.

Strengths
Experience of senior Indian players
The capped Indian talent has always been a strength of the franchise and it is no different this time around as well - Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma in the top and middle order, captain Hardik Pandya and Deepak Chahar in the all-rounder's department and Jasprit Bumrah as the leader of the pace attack.
Rohit, Hardik, Suryakumar and Bumrah have led the team to numerous victories in the past. But, ahead of this season the Indian T20I skipper's form is a concern again as Suryakumar had an insipid T20 World Cup 2026 by his standards. Nevertheless, with loads of matches lined up the class of the Mumbai batter is expected to come to the fore sooner rather than later. On the other hand, Bumrah and Hardik are in terrific form.
Variety of overseas options
Over the years, MI's overseas recruits have also been a major contributor to their successes. The think tank conjures up a fine mix of foreign players who play their role to perfection. This season, the franchise has a variety of such options at its disposal. Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks, Sherfane Rutherford are all seasoned T20 batters while the likes of Corbin Bosch, Trent Boult, and AM Ghazanfar can lead the bowling attack on their day. With a season as long as 84 matches this time, the diversity of talent available allows the team management breathing space in case of any eventuality.
Weaknesses
Untested uncapped Indian players
Uncapped players are also key to an IPL team's success as much as senior Indian and overseas stars. For MI this season, apart from Naman Dhir, nearly all the other uncapped players are low on IPL experience though. Notably, the franchise is known to pick special talents who repay the faith of the franchise. The team management would be hoping for the same from its Indian domestic talent.
Slightly thin spin attack
The squad comprises three specialist, capped spinners - Mitchell Santner, AM Ghazanfar, and Mayank Markande. With the first two being overseas players, it is unlikely that both of them will be included in the XI together for the bulk of the matches. Fortunately, there is another potent option in the form of Will Jacks who has had success on the subcontinental surfaces in the T20 World Cup recently and is an aggressive batter too who would find a place in the XI on a regular basis. But beyond these names, the rest of the spin attack is thin on top-level experience.
Opportunities
Nearly all of the squad members who were part of the T20 World Cup are in good form. Notably, Hardik the all-rounder too contributed immensely to the Indian team's historic third triumph and now the stage is set for Hardik the captain to rise and repeat what he did with Gujarat Titans in their maiden campaign in 2022. The Baroda lad is riding high on confidence of late which augurs well for him and the team.
Threats
The biggest question for the franchise this season is how the uncapped and inexperienced Indian players would cope up with the rigours and pressures of IPL cricket. On the one hand there are senior professionals who have years of rich experience while on the other are the inexperienced lot who are untested. Moreover, MI would be hoping to click as a team which they have failed to do so in the past few years. Despite having an impressive set of players, the team could not fire as a unit which led to them achieving limited success.
