With three fixtures left in the ongoing IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) find themselves in survival mode, clinging to nine points and languishing at eighth on the table. Their playoff hopes hang by a thread, and so too does the future of their skipper, Ajinkya Rahane, who has three innings left to prove he still has the mettle, both as a batter wielding his willow and as a tactician steering a franchise through stormy waters.

Rahane’s campaign has been underwhelming. In 11 innings, he has aggregated 237 runs at an average of 23.70 and a strike rate of 133.14. These numbers pale in comparison to the batting pyrotechnics on display this season. In a tournament where batters have consistently raised the ceiling of stroke‑play, Rahane’s blade has struggled to produce the fireworks expected of a captain.

His solitary fifty came in KKR’s opener against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede, a fluent 67 that promised much but proved to be a false dawn. Since then, inconsistency has plagued him. He recorded two consecutive ducks, the first against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on April 17, and the second against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 19 at Eden Gardens.

He has also registered two single‑digit scores and only three knocks beyond 30: 67 vs MI, 41 vs Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and 43 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

At 37, with his 38th birthday looming in 20 days, Rahane’s career arc is under intense scrutiny. Questions swirl not just around his batting returns but also his leadership credentials. With KKR reeling in the lower half of the table, his captaincy has come under the scanner.

For Rahane, the next three games are more than just fixtures. They are auditions. He must break free of the shackles, rediscover the sumptuous stroke‑play that once defined his batting, and inspire his side in crunch situations. Failure to do so could see KKR part ways, leaving Rahane’s IPL career hanging in the balance.

The stage is set, and the stakes are monumental. For both Rahane and KKR, survival hinges on turning promise into performance.
