Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will enter the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) with an aim to end their two-year-long playoffs drought. LSG debuted in IPL in 2022 and had a good first two seasons as they made it to the knockout stages of both editions. However, their performance graph went downhill in 2024 after they failed to finish in the top four in successive seasons.
After a horrendous performance in 2024, where LSG struggled to match the modern-day batting standards, the management brought in a change of leadership by releasing former captain KL Rahul and buying Rishabh Pant at the mega auction. While Lucknow had a good start to the IPL 2025 under Pant’s leadership, their campaign went off track after the first few matches, and they eventually missed out on the playoffs spot.

As LSG prepare for a fresh start in IPL 2026 after reinforcing their squad at the mini auction, here’s a SWOT analysis of their squad ahead of the season:
Strengths
Strong batting unit
Batting has been the biggest strength of LSG since last season, as they boast one of the strongest lineups of the tournament heading into the new season. The presence of Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis, Rishabh Pant, Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad provides enough firepower from top to bottom.
A balanced bowling attack
In the bowling department, the additions of Mohammed Shami and Wanindu Hasaranga have brought in the much-needed experience. On the other hand, youngsters like Akash Singh, Digvesh Rathi and Mayank Yadav will be expected to build on the promise shown in the previous seasons.
Weaknesses
LSG’s last season was heavily impacted due to injuries, as most of their frontline seamers remained on the sidelines due to fitness issues. Their success in the upcoming season could well hinge on the management of their versatile pace battery, the majority of which is coming after recovering from injuries.
Shami is in the twilight of his career and had his worst season ever in 2025. On the other hand, Mayank Yadav recently made a comeback to professional cricket after a long injury layoff. Even Avesh Khan has been on the sidelines for a long time, while Mohsin Khan also has a history of injuries. Hence, keeping the fragile pace attack on the park for the entire season will be a herculean task for LSG.
Opportunities
Can Captain Pant step up?
Captain Rishabh Pant had his worst-ever IPL season in 2025 since his debut, as the pressure of the Rs 27 crore price tag and captaincy was reflected in his performance. Pant only scored 269 runs from 13 innings last season, out of which 118* came in his last innings.
The upcoming season presents the perfect opportunity for Pant to lead his team from the front and raise his stock as a T20 player in the Indian cricketing fraternity. The southpaw finds himself out of the Indian T20I side since 2024, and a successful season for LSG will not only help Pant find a way back into the side but also in the leadership positions of the limited-overs team.
For long, Pant has been touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket with experts backing him to lead the team in the near future. However, the southpaw hasn’t done justice to his talent outside of Tests, and the upcoming season could well mark a new beginning for the wicketkeeper batter.
Threats
Players' availability and worrying home record
LSG signed Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga for Rs 2 Crore during the mini auction for the ongoing season. However, he's yet to arrive in India due to a delay in being granted the No Objection Certificate (NOC) by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Hasaranga is expected to provide both batting depth and a wicket-taking bowling option for Lucknow, but his delayed arrival will disrupt their team combinations and pre-season planning.
Apart from him, Australia batter Josh Inglis will have limited availability during the season as he’s set to get married in April. His absence is likely to leave a major hole in the batting lineup, which will need mending in the middle of the season.
Moreover, LSG have historically struggled to maintain winning momentum at their home ground, BRSABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. They have the second-worst win percentage (43.33%) at home among all ten teams, having won just 13 out of 30 matches. Maintaining a good home record will be key to a successful campaign.
