Shreyas Iyer ensured that Punjab Kings (PBKS) remained alive in the playoffs race of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), guiding his team to a commanding seven-wicket victory against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday, May 23. On a night filled with pressure and desperation, Punjab’s ‘Sarpanch’ (head) rose like a leader possessed, scripting an innings that could well spark PBKS' resurgence after enduring a six-match losing streak.
Iyer arrived at the crease with PBKS reeling at 22/2 in 2.2 overs, in the face of a massive 197-run chase in a must-win fixture. After playing two dot deliveries, Iyer got off the mark with a classy boundary through covers as he punched Mohammed Shami off the back foot. He further played an on drive to collect his second successive boundary, announcing his arrival at the crease in style.

From there on, Iyer was always a step ahead of every bowler, not allowing them to settle and unleashing some majestic shots from his repertoire to punish them for missing their lengths. The PBKS skipper wasn’t just batting out there; he was dictating terms, stamping his authority, almost butchering the Lucknow bowling attack with his marauding strokeplay.
Iyer was visibly hurt after how things had gone downhill for his side, following a remarkable beginning to the campaign, where they remained unbeaten in the first seven games. However, six successive losses had dampened the entire dressing room’s spirits, and they desperately needed their skipper to show them the way and uplift them.
A knock that lifted the dressing room
Each shot from Iyer’s bat didn’t just help him score runs; it healed the wounds that had scarred PBKS’ campaign over the last month, as they had been waiting for a win for 28 days. As the innings progressed, the Punjab camp rediscovered its voice, feeding off the assurance of their skipper.
Throughout the course of the run chase, the nonchalance of Shreyas Iyer had everyone captivated as he remained unflustered, carefully manoeuvring the ball in the gaps and hitting boundaries at will. During the course of his innings, he also completed 7000 runs in T20 cricket and put on an exhibition of six-hitting at the end to eventually register his maiden IPL century.
The new chasemaster in IPL
A top-class 101* (51), laced with 11 fours and five sixes, made sure that Punjab lived to see another day in the tournament. The PBKS skipper is now the second-highest scorer in successful chases in IPL since 2024, having accumulated 793 runs from 16 innings at an astonishing average of 158.6 (best) and a strike rate of 178.2 with one hundred and eight fifties.
As soon as Iyer completed his milestone, he let out a roar, raising his arms aloft to acknowledge the crowd’s support.
The road ahead may still be uncertain, but Punjab finally have momentum back on their side. While the playoffs’ fate may not be in their hands, Shreyas Iyer has no intention of letting his team’s journey end quietly.
