Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) were handed their third defeat of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), as Gujarat Titans (GT) beat them by four wickets on Thursday, April 30, at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The defending champions once again came out all guns blazing to start their innings as Virat Kohli set the tone by hitting Kagiso Rabada for five successive fours in just the second over.

However, in no time, wickets began to fall as RCB got all out for the first time in the season. Despite batters falling in clusters during the middle phase of the innings, nobody was willing to bide his time on the pitch and assess the conditions to take a backseat against a relentless bowling attack.

A crucial moment in the RCB innings came when Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma were dismissed in a space of four deliveries. Despite that, Krunal Pandya, Tim David and Romario Shepherd got caught while trying to play shots as RCB were eventually bundled out for a mere 155.

No second gear in RCB's batting?

As RCB crumbled, batting coach Dinesh Karthik was unflinching as he again emphasised the need to bat positively during his chat with the commentators on the sidelines of the first innings. Karthik’s words echoed a philosophy that has come to define this RCB outfit. Since 2025, they have adopted a high-tempo brand of cricket, scoring at 10.04 runs per over, the third best among all ten teams.

The same fearless template powered them to a maiden IPL title in 2025 and has also made them the most successful side across the last two seasons, with 17 wins from 24 matches. Moreover, four RCB players feature in the list of top 15 batters with the highest strike rate (minimum 200 runs) this season, the most from any team.

However, the collapse against GT also revealed that RCB’s all-out attacking batting philosophy has little room for correction after an early collapse. On surfaces that demand caution or against bowling attacks that come well-prepared to counter their threat, the absence of a second gear can often prove costly.

A tweak needed in the approach?

However, despite its volatility, RCB are unlikely to abandon their template, which is now not merely a tactic but the identity of the team. The challenge for the defending champions going forward will not be to dilute their aggression but to recognise moments that demand a different approach.

The ability to sense when to press on the accelerator and when to briefly hold the brake will only do wonders for their phenomenal campaign in the ongoing season. Until then, fans must realise that these collapses are intrinsic to a philosophy built on living by the sword and occasionally dying by it.
