A quick glance at India and Gujarat Titans’ (GT) captain Shubman Gill’s Instagram profile is enough to explain why he’s among the most popular young cricketers in the world today. A whopping 20 million followers and several viral reels stamps his status as the ‘fan favourite’.

His batting may have made him a star, but during the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), it was his social media game that became almost as entertaining as his performances on the pitch.

As captain of Gujarat Titans (GT), Gill led from the front throughout a remarkable campaign that saw his side emerge as one of the strongest teams in the tournament. But every victory brought with it something else that fans began eagerly waiting for, a cheeky Instagram post from the GT skipper.

During the IPL, Gill’s numerous social media posts gained traction as the Gujarat Titans (GT) captain got involved in harmless banter with every team GT defeated during the season. After every victory, Gill didn’t miss an opportunity to poke fun at the opponent, sharing images from the game with a quirky caption.

The whistle that started it all

It all started on 26th April as Gill shared a photograph from his flight, following GT’s comprehensive victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk. In the photo, the GT captain could be seen holding a yellow whistle in his right hand, admiring it with a grin.

The caption of the post read ‘Nandri Chenai (Thank you Chennai). The yellow whistle is synonymous with the franchise's iconic "Whistle Podu" slogan, and Gill tried to get under CSK's fans' skin with his post.

While it was received well by many, a few sections of fans were irked and launched a scathing attack on the GT skipper.

Caption game that got stronger with every win

A few weeks later, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) found themselves at the receiving end after Gujarat secured a four-wicket win over the defending champions. Posing alongside Player of the Match Jason Holder, Gill cleverly twisted RCB’s famous slogan in his caption, again getting onto the nerves of one of the biggest fandoms in IPL history.

“Play Hold. Jason Holder. Bold performance by the team tonight," he wrote in the caption.

With every victory, Gill seemed to become more creative.

After defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS), he posted a picture alongside Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar performing the popular "thigh-five" celebration. The caption, “Bas jeetna hai. Aava de,” was a playful spin on PBKS' slogan, "Bas Jeetna Hai."

When Rajasthan Royals (RR) were beaten, Gill signed off with, “Pink city, blue result. Khamma Ghani.” The GT skipper further took a dig at the four-year domination over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) with “Dil abhi bhi sache aur ghar abhi bhi kache,” referring to a quip from an old interview with Ishan Kishan.

Banter backfires

Another victory over CSK led to ‘Nandri 2. Yellow lights, blue ending.’ Gill’s witty captions had almost become a part of Gujarat’s remarkable campaign as they stormed into the final. However, much to his dismay, his team ended on the wrong side of the result against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), losing by five wickets in the summit clash.

As expected, all the fanbases that Gill had annoyed throughout the season came to rub salt into his wounds. His comment sections were flooded. CSK fans remembered the whistle, while RCB fans revisited the "Play Hold" caption. Supporters of every franchise that had been on the receiving end of his banter suddenly returned to celebrate Gujarat's defeat.

It was almost as if he dug his own grave, getting on fans’ nerves when his team was on top, not realising it could all soon end. And that day arrived after the final, and fans were eagerly waiting for another post from Gill after being humbled in the summit clash.

Gill's humility wins hearts

However, what he did left everyone stunned. Sharing the champions' graphic from the IPL’s Instagram handle, Gill congratulated RCB using their tagline that he once joked about, ‘Play Bold’. Life had come full circle for Gill, as after irking fanbases throughout the season, he finally had to accept his defeat at last.

And that’s the beauty of sport, it teaches you to be humble in both victory and defeat. The same captain who had spent an entire season teasing rival fanbases now acknowledged defeat with grace and sportsmanship.

In the end, Gill showed that true sporting spirit isn't measured by how loudly you celebrate success, but by how gracefully you respond when it all ends.
