What was anticipated to be a blockbuster start to a highly anticipated Test series between South Africa and Australia turned into a fairly one-sided contest. The tourists thrashed the hosts by 214 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The defeat also ended Temba Bavuma's 12-match unbeaten run as captain in Test cricket. However, Bavuma and his teammates have only themselves to blame, having allowed Australia to seize control after being firmly on the back foot.
Let's look at a few reasons that cost Bavuma his unbeaten streak and South Africa an opportunity to stamp their authority on the series:
#1 South Africa's two-spinner strategy backfires
South Africa misread the pitch at Kingsmead. Their decision to field two spinners came back to haunt them, as there was very little assistance on offer for spin bowlers across the five days. Keshav Maharaj went wicketless despite bowling 20 overs in the first innings and conceded 75 runs at an economy rate of 3.75. His spin partner, Simon Harmer, managed just one wicket after toiling through 28.2 overs.
In the second innings, Maharaj picked up two wickets while Harmer claimed one. However, neither looked capable of consistently troubling the Australian batters, who piled on the runs and eventually declared at 314/6.
It was not as though the South African spinners were below par. Australia's lone frontline spinner, Nathan Lyon, also endured a quiet match. Lyon claimed two wickets in the first innings after bowling 22 overs and went wicketless in the second despite sending down another 20 overs.
South Africa's decision to play two spinners may have been influenced by their 67-run victory in the first ODI at the same venue before the Test series. In that match, Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin produced match-winning spells, claiming four and two wickets respectively, as Australia failed to bat out their allotted 50 overs.
However, the pitch used for the first ODI bore little resemblance to the one prepared for the Test match.
#2 Rust shows: 317 days away from Test cricket comes back to haunt Proteas
Test cricket is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the sport. It is also its most unforgiving format and showed no mercy even to the reigning world champions. South Africa entered the Durban Test against Australia having gone 317 days without playing a Test match.
Their previous red-ball outing came against India in Guwahati in November last year, a match they won by a massive 408 runs. In contrast, Australia had recent experience in the format, having hosted Bangladesh for a two-Test series in August.
#3 Renshaw allowed to escape: Bavuma's biggest tactical miss
South Africa made a dream start to the Test despite losing the toss, reducing Australia to 124/6 on the opening day. With Australia's last recognised batting pair, Matt Renshaw and Australia captain Pat Cummins, at the crease, the hosts needed to apply relentless pressure. Instead, they allowed the opportunity to slip away.
Despite being firmly on top, Bavuma employed defensive field placements against Renshaw, allowing him to work the ball into gaps and retain the strike on the first ball of a new over 13 consecutive times. The tactic enabled Renshaw to shield Cummins and steadily rebuild the innings.
#4 Starts without substance: South Africa fail to cash in when it mattered most
After the defeat, Bavuma said, "When Renshaw and Cummins came together, conditions were a lot more in their favour, and they became a lot more ruthless." He also argued that the pitch had flattened out and the ball had softened by that stage.
However, South Africa also enjoyed favourable batting conditions during their first innings. The fact that six batters crossed the 30-run mark highlighted the opportunities available. Yet, none managed to convert their starts into a half-century, underlining their inability to make the most of the conditions when they were at their best.
