Match Preview
Pakistan and New Zealand clash in Match 41, the first of the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, February 21.
Both the teams have had a similar journey leading into the Super Eights. Pakistan had a scare against the Netherlands in the very first match of the tournament followed by a comfortable victory against the USA. Against their arch-rivals India, they failed to nail down a 176-run target whereas they completed a massive 102-run win against Namibia to qualify for this leg.

New Zealand overcame Afghanistan and the UAE comfortably before being annihilated by South Africa in Ahmedabad. They came back to Chennai for the last game of the group stage against Canada which they won pretty easily. The team, which was based out of India for more than a month, has now set up base in Colombo and will play all their three Super Eights matches at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
Pakistan are in a familiar territory having been based out of the same city and played a game at Khettarama as well. The nature of wicket at the venue would help the several spinners that Pakistan have in their squad and it might be a stern test for the Kiwi batters who have been used to the batting-friendly tracks of India.
New Zealand would look to boost their spin attack in Sri Lanka and that will bring in Ish Sodhi most certainly. Compared to Pakistan, the Kiwis do not have a variety of spinners and it will be interesting to see how they spread their spin attack over their overs.
As for the team news, full-time captain Mitchell Santner has recovered from his illness and will be leading the side. Lockie Feguson, who returns from New Zealand on Friday night, is not a certainty at the moment. For Pakistan, Salman Mirza is likely to get another chance in place of Shaheen Shah Afridi while Abrar Ahmed is expected to come back to boost the spin attack.

PAK vs NZ: Players to watch out for
Tim Seifert (NZ):
Seifert, who was the highest run-scorer in the tournament a few days back, is now seventh on the list. The Kiwi is expected to come good again though it will be a challenge for the man-in-form at Premadasa. With 173 runs from four matches and two half centuries to his name, New Zealand will bank on his aggression to accelerate whenever the situation and conditions allow.
Usman Tariq (PAK):
Tariq is perhaps the most-talked player of the tournament right now. The Pakistani spinner with multiple variations will be a threat without a doubt. The off spinner on paper has eight wickets from three matches with a best of 4/16 against Namibia. Notably, the spinner was fairly successful against India at Premadasa as he was difficult to get away producing figures of 1/24.
Today's Match Prediction: Pakistan to win.
