Match Preview
Sri Lanka and New Zealand clash in their second Super Eights match of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday, February 25.
Sri Lanka suffered a defeat in their previous game against England at Pallekele. More than anything else, the manner in which they lost was shocking as they were undone by the sluggishness of the wicket which one expects them to be accustomed to. Add to that the loss against Zimbabwe in the match before and it appears the campaign is off track for the co-hosts. A win is the minimum that the home team needs in this match as a loss would knock them out.

New Zealand's first Super Eights game against Pakistan was washed out on last Saturday. The team which has played all its matches in Chennai and Ahmedabad only would have to adapt to the Premadasa's conditions. Notably, the Kiwis play all their Super Eights games at the same venue and so it is crucial for them to learn and adjust as quickly as possible.
As for the team news, Sri Lanka have no injury worries and are likely to field the same XI. As far as New Zealand are concerned, they have a well-rested group. Lockie Ferguson was back in the XI for the last match before rain played spoilsport and the pacer is expected to keep his place. Overall, no drastic changes are expected.
The pitch to be used for this clash would be a fresh one, but it is expected to exhibit traits similar to the other ones at the venue. And the most important bit of news perhaps is rain is not expected to make its presence felt and so there is a high likelihood of a full 40-over game being possible.

SL vs NZ: Players to watch out for
Daryl Mitchell (NZ):
Mitchell is perhaps the most proficient player of spin in the New Zealand squad. The right-hander has a very good record batting in Asia; his average is better than what it is at home and the strike rate is almost at par. The conditions at Khettarama will be tricky and the Kiwis can rely on Mitchell to come in the middle overs and launch at the fag end. Incidentally, the 34-year-old has got two opportunities to bat in the tournament only though and has scored 57 runs. New Zealand can promote him up the order to counter the Lankan spin attack.
Maheesh Theekshana (SL):
Theekshana is the highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka in the tournament. The off spinner has eight wickets to his name from five innings and the 25-year-old can be a touch risky to attack. The ability of Theekshana to come up with different variations at different times can keep the runs down and produce wickets. The conditions are expected to favour him and the right-arm bowler can be a key player. Although he had a forgettable outing at Premadasa against Zimbabwe (0/47), the Colombo-born performed very well against Ireland (3/23) nevertheless.
Today's Match Prediction: Sri Lanka to win.
