Match Preview

West Indies Women (WI-W) and Australia Women (AUS-W) clash in the first T20I of the three-match series at Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent on Thursday, March 19.

The home team is coming into the series with a 0-2 loss to Sri Lanka earlier this month at home itself. Despite having a good mix of experienced and young players, the West Indies failed to click as a team and lost both the matches without a strong challenge. Meanwhile, the squad for the upcoming series is pretty much the same which indicates faith in the same set of players. However, they would be up for a tough series against a formidable Australian side.

Talking of the visitors, they suffered a 1-2 series defeat to India at home just for the second time ever. It was a rocky start to the newly appointed skipper Sophie Molineux's reign and with the T20 World Cup three months away, the team management expects the all-rounder to settle down in the role quickly. Incidentally, this is the side's last assignment in the format before the mega event in England.

As for team news, Ellyse Perry and Kim Garth who suffered quad strains during the India series are fit to play and are most likely to slot into the XI. Molineux, who herself was out of action after the first ODI against India, is back. However, she is not likely to bowl.

WI-W vs AUS-W: Players to watch out for

Ashleigh Gardner (AUS-W):

Gardner would be playing her 100th T20I on Thursday evening. The gun all-rounder has been in decent form of late with both bat and ball. With doubts over Molineux's availability for bowling, Gardner's role becomes even more pronounced as a spinner. The 28-year-old will be a key player with the bat too considering her experience in the Caribbean conditions.

Hayley Matthews (WI-W):

Matthews had a poor T20I series against Sri Lanka by her standards. The opening batter though is not out of form as she scored a century in an ODI recently. On the other hand, Matthews has been very much consistent with the ball. Even when she has not been able to pick up wickets, the off-spinner has been successful at keeping the runs down.
