Eshan Malinga was one of the very few Sri Lankan players who were retained ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Malinga, 25, has earned the trust of the SRH team management in a very short span of time.
The right-arm speedster had an impressive start to his IPL career after Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him at the IPL 2025 auction for INR 1.20 crore. Malinga snared 13 scalps in seven games for SRH in IPL 2025 and finished as the third leading wicket-taker for the team behind Pat Cummins (16 wickets) and Harshal Patel (16).

But while Cummins and Harshal got their wickets at economy rates of 9.06 and 9.80 respectively, Malinga's wickets came at an economy rate of 8.92 runs per over. He averages 18.30 in the cash-rich league. His career best bowling figures in the tournament came in the 68th match of IPL 2025 when he claimed 3/31 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on May 25.
Malinga has represented Sri Lanka in both white-ball formats. He made his ODI debut against New Zealand in Wellington on January 5, 2025. His T20I debut came against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi on November 20 last year, in a tri-series involving Pakistan.
There will be a lot riding on the shoulders of Malinga in IPL 2026 as SRH are without the services of their designated captain, Cummins.
Additionally, Sunrisers Hyderabad's bowling attack has been one of the worst hit by injuries this season. They lost their overseas signing, Brydon Carse, after he injured his right hand during a training session. His replacement, David Payne, who played two games, has also been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury sustained during a practice session.
