Mohammed Shami made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2013, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after warming the bench for two seasons. However, he didn’t have a memorable first season, where he scalped just one wicket from three games.
He was later picked up by Delhi Capitals (DC) in the following year, but his struggles continued as he could only take seven wickets out of 12 matches. After spending four years in Delhi, Shami was picked up by Punjab Kings for the 2019 season, where he had his first good season in the IPL, taking 19 wickets from 14 matches at an average of 24.68.

Shami’s IPL career saw an upward curve during his time with Punjab, as he continued his good form and scalped 20 wickets in the 2020 season and 19 wickets in the 2021 season. The speedster was high in demand during the 2022 auction and was picked up by the newly formed Gujarat Titans, where he touched unprecedented heights in his career.
He scalped 20 wickets from 16 matches in Gujarat’s triumph in their maiden season of the IPL in 2022. Shami was at his menacing best in the 2023 season, finishing as the highest wicket-taker of the season with 28 wickets from 17 matches at an average of 18.64 with a career-best figures of 4/11.
As a result, he won his maiden Purple Cap of IPL career, before missing out the 2024 season due to an injury. Shami returned in 2025 but had his worst-ever season, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The 35-year-old has returned in 2026 with a new hunger and zeal, which is evident in his performances so far.
