The Indian Premier League (IPL) has the tendency of producing several rags to riches stories which have the power to captivate the imagination of even those who do not have anything to do with the sport in general. Uttar Pradesh's Rinku Singh has carved one such storyline himself.

While Rinku has become synonymous with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, his journey in the cash-rich league began at a franchise based out of north India - Kings XI Punjab (KXIP, now Punjab Kings).

Punjab signed Rinku for INR 10 lakhs at the IPL 2017 auction. The southpaw was one of the eight players that KXIP bought at the auction that year, including names like Eoin Morgan, Varun Aaron, Daren Sammy and Martin Guptill, among others.

A star-studded batting line-up at Punjab meant that Rinku warmed the bench the entire season and didn't get a look-in.

He was released at the end of the season and was bought by KKR for INR 80 lakhs at the IPL 2018 auction. Rinku only got a handful of opportunities in his first three years inside the KKR camp. When the KKR management gave him seven games in IPL 2022, Rinku capitalised.

The left-hander scored 174 runs at an average of 34.80 and a strike rate of 148.71. Then came his breakout season (IPL 2024), where he amassed 474 runs for the franchise at an average of 59.25 and a strike rate of 149.52, including four half-centuries. He also famously hit Gujarat Titans pacer Yash Dayal for five sixes in an over to clinch an improbable win for KKR.

His earnings increased by 2264% in IPL 2025 when KKR retained him for INR 13 crore.
