The Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) is expected to be the most important season of Ruturaj Gaikwad’s career as he heads into the tournament, returning as Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) full-time captain. Gaikwad was handed over CSK's leadership duties in 2024 and had a good debut season as skipper.
However, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs, losing out on the fourth spot to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He continued to be the skipper in 2025 as well; however, an injury cut short his season midway through after a poor start. He now returns to restore CSK’s old era of dominance after the franchise made some valuable additions to their squad in the mini auction.

It will be Gaikwad’s eighth season in the IPL, having made his debut with CSK in 2020. A forgettable season for Chennai forced the team to test their bench strength and eventually led them to discover their future captain.
Gaikwad had decent outings in his first season, scoring 204 runs from six innings. However, he finally made a mark for himself in 2021, guiding CSK to their fourth title by scoring 635 runs at an average of 45.35 with one hundred and four fifties to his name.
Gaikwad also won the orange cap award for finishing as the highest run scorer of the season, becoming just the second player to win the orange cap as IPL champion.

Gaikwad had a quiet season in 2022 as CSK once again struggled, but was again back to his best in 2023, playing a key role again in his team’s fifth title. The opening batter accumulated 590 runs at an average of 42.14 and a thunderous strike rate of 147.50 with four fifties to his name.
He later assumed captaincy in 2024 and will be back this year to change the script from last season, where CSK finished last for the first time in their history.
