Ryan Rickelton has emerged as a hard-hitting left-handed opener that Mumbai Indians (MI) needed to pair with their legendary batter Rohit Sharma. Born on July 11, 1996, in Transvaal, South Africa, Rickelton attended St. Stithians College.
Cricket was not the only sport the southpaw played while growing up. He played rugby, squash and also participated in weightlifting. Rickelton was primed to make it to South Africa's squad for the ICC Men's U19 World Cup in 2014 in the UAE, but missed out on selection.

Rickelton plays for MI Cape Town in the SA20, South Africa's premier T20 domestic competition. He has played all four seasons of the tournament and aggregated 1349 runs in 34 innings. The 29-year-old averages 43.51 and has chalked up his runs at a strike rate of 160.97. The southpaw has also hit two centuries and eight fifties in the league. He is the leading run-getter in SA20.
Rickelton was initially not picked in South Africa's squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. But an injury to Tony de Zorzi during South Africa's multi-format tour of India before the SA20 turned Rickelton's fortunes.
Ricketon accumulated 337 runs in nine innings for MI Cape Town in the SA20 and finished as the third-highest run-scorer. He averaged 42.12 and batted at a strike rate of 156.01, including two centuries. As de Zorzi failed to recover on time, South Africa drafted Rickelton into the squad for the T20 World Cup as his injury replacement.
Rickelton registered for the IPL 2025 auction at INR 1 crore and was bought by Mumbai Indians for the same amount. He played 14 games for the franchise and amassed 388 runs, averaging 29.84 at a strike rate of 150.97, including three fifties. Rickelton was retained for the IPL 2026 season at the same price.
