Sanju Samson began his IPL career as a 17-year-old. Though he didn't play a single game, he was a part of Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL 2012-winning squad. Samson received INR 8 lakhs for playing for KKR in 2012.
However, he only got his opportunity to display his talent after he was picked up Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2013 season for INR 10 lakhs. In 11 games, Samson scored 206 runs at an average of 25.75 and a strike rate of 115.73, including a fifty.

Rajasthan saw potential in him, and they increased his IPL contract by 5400%, paying him 5.50 crore for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The right-hander aggregated 339 and 204 runs in the 2014 and 2015 seasons at strike rates of 124.17 and 125.15, respectively.
Royals released him ahead of the 2016 season, and he was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 4.20 crore. Samson had a decent 2016 season, accumulating 291 runs, averaging 26.45 and striking at 112.35.
His performance improved dramatically in 2017 when he amassed 386 runs in 14 matches at an average of 27.57 and a strike rate of 141.39. He scored his maiden IPL ton that season and paired it with two fifties.
2018 saw the beginning of what was going to be an eight-year-long association between Samson and Royals. Royals snaffled Samson by splurging INR 8 crore at the auction. The wicket-keeper lived up to his price tag and racked up 441 runs in 15 matches at an average of 31.50 and a strike rate of 137.81, with the help of three half-centuries.
Smason's stay at Royals lasted till 2025, and he also had the honour of leading them. Under his leadership, Royals qualified for the finals of the IPL 2022 season, but couldn't cross the final hurdle. He was traded by Rajasthan to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before the start of the 2026 season.
