Shubman Gill's magnificent 86 off 50 balls, laced with eight fours and four sixes helped Gujarat Titans beat KKR by five wickets in match No. 25 of the ongoing IPL 2026 season at the Narendra Modi Stadium on April 17.

Gill's knock, which helped him earn the Player of the Match (POTM) award, has powered Gujarat to the fourth spot on the points table. They now have three wins and two losses after five games and have accumulated six points with a net run rate (NRR) of 0.018.

Gill is crucial for Titans' chances to qualify for the playoffs this season. He is their most experienced batter and has notched up the most runs (2700) for them in IPL history. Gill's runs for Titans have come at an average of 47.36 and a strike rate of 150.25 - the highest among the top-five leading run-getters for the franchise. He also has four centuries and 19 fifties to his name.

But Gill's IPL career didn't start at Titans. He began his career in the cash-rich league with an INR 1.80 crore paycheck at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2018 season after winning the ICC Men's U19 World Cup in New Zealand.

He represented KKR in four seasons (2018-2021) and was snaffled by Gujarat for INR 8 crore (a jump of 344% in his IPL earnings) at the IPL 2022 auction. After receiving INR 8 crore for three seasons (2022-2024), Gill was retained by Titans for INR 16.50 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 auction - an uptick of 106% in his IPL income.

Titans have retained him for the same amount for the ongoing 19th edition of the marquee tournament. Interestingly enough, Gill, despite being the captain, is not the highest-paid in the Titans camp. Afghanistan's Rashid Khan is the highest-paid athlete at Titans with an annual earning of INR 18 crore.

Meanwhile, Gill alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja are the only three players who are a part of Grade A of BCCI's annual retainership contract.
