Varun Chakravarthy began his journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being bought by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the 2019 season of the tournament, following impressive performances for Tamil Nadu and in the TNPL (Tamil Nadu Premier League).
However, he didn’t have a memorable beginning to his IPL career, conceding 25 runs in his very first over. He later injured his finger and didn’t feature in any other game in the season. After a forgetful beginning, he was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the mini-auction ahead of the 2020 season, where he made heads turn with his variations, leaving several top batters befuddled.

The wrist-spinner finished as KKR’s highest wicket-taker of the season with 17 wickets from 13 innings at an average of 20.94 and an economy of 6.84. He followed it up with another impressive performance in 2021 as well, again finishing as KKR’s leading wicket taker with 18 scalps from 17 innings during their run to the final.
The same year, Chakravarthy made his India debut and was also picked for the T20 World Cup 2021. However, much to everyone’s surprise, he failed to scalp a single wicket in the tournament after playing three matches, as India got knocked out in the group stage itself.

The T20 World Cup failure brought with it a tumultuous period in Chakravarthy’s career, who had a horrible IPL in 2022, taking just six wickets from 11 innings.
After working hard on his bowling and adding several new tricks up his sleeve, Chakravarthy returned in 2023 and once again topped the wicket-taking charts for KKR with 20 scalps from 14 innings. Another brilliant season in KKR’s victorious campaign in 2024 also opened the doors for a team India comeback for Chakravarthy.
Unlike his first stint, he emerged as the genuine wicket-taker for the team and became a regular mainstay in the format in no time. He played a crucial role in guiding the team to the Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026 triumphs.
Chakravarthy has only risen in stature since his IPL debut in 2019 and still carries the same hunger to bowl match-winning spells for both India and KKR.
