India rewrote a new chapter in their glorious ODI history on Wednesday (September 30) as they recorded their highest-ever successful run chase in the format, making a mockery of a 406-run target against West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
India captain Shubman Gill was phenomenally brilliant as he scored a magnificent double century and led the charge up front. He added 255 runs for the opening wicket alongside Rohit Sharma - the second-highest opening stand for India in men's ODIs. This was Gill's second double hundred in ODI cricket and also the fastest by any player in the format. Gill also became only the second player in history of the game to score two double centuries in ODIs. Rohit leads the charts with three such scores.
Rohit also registered a memorable ton, scoring 101 off just 75 balls, laced with 10 fours and six sixes. He batted at a strike rate of 134.66 and never let the tourists get a sniff in the second innings.
India's previous highest successful chase had come against Australia at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on October 16, 2013. The Men in Blue scaled down a mammoth target of 360 in just 43.3 overs and with nine wickets to spare. Rohit and Virat Kohli were the heroes of that chase. Rohit scored a 123-ball 141* while Virat hammered a 52-ball century, which remains the all-time India record in the 50-over format.
