The ICC Men's U19 World Cup serves as a globally-renowned launchpad, allowing prodigies from around the world to announce their arrival. The marquee tournament has seen the rise of several Indian stars who have gone on to serve the nation at the international stage for decades.
Similarly, the 2018 edition of the showpiece event paved the way for a young Shubman Gill, who now holds the reins of the Indian Test and ODI teams and is being tipped as the next big thing in Indian cricket.

Earmarked for success from a tender age, Shubman's passion for the game prompted his father, Lakhwinder Singh, to move to Mohali from the small district of Fazilka, located on the Indo-Pak border.
From chucking 600 to 700 balls to him in the nets to skipping family gatherings, Shubman's father went the extra mile in providing his son the best environment possible to help him chase his dream.
Rising through the ranks in age-group cricket, Shubman made a place for himself in India's U19 World Cup 2018 squad in New Zealand. The boy from Fazilka gave an exhibition of his batting prowess throughout the course of the signature event and was adjudged the Player of the Tournament.
Shubman chalked up 372 runs across five innings at an astounding average of 124.00, including an unbeaten hundred and three fifties. His talismanic presence in the middle order guided India to their fourth ICC Men's U19 World Cup title.
Impressed with the promise he offered, the Indian selectors named him in the ODI squad for the New Zealand tour in 2019. While he only managed nine on his debut at Seddon Park in Hamilton before lobbing a caught-and-bowled to Trent Boult, he grabbed everyone's attention with his grit during his short stay at the crease.
Shubman has come a long way as a batter in ODI cricket since his debut and boasts a record to be envied in the format. The 26-year-old has accumulated 2818 runs in 58 games at an eye-popping average of 56.36 while striking at nearly 100 per innings (99.22). He has already struck eight hundreds and 15 fifties in his career and looks poised to get many more.
Shubman's maturity as a player has allowed the selectors to put their faith in him by naming him Rohit Sharma's successor as India gear up to go one better at the 2027 Men's ODI World Cup.

His record in T20Is isn't the true reflection of his ball-striking potential, but the top-order batter is gradually getting there. In 33 T20Is, he has amassed 837 runs while striking at 140.43 and averaging a shade under 30. Having scored a ton, he is one of only 12 India players to have a century in T20Is.

His IPL numbers suggest that it won't be long before Shubman makes a mark in T20 internationals. The captain of the former champions, Gujarat Titans, has racked up 3866 runs in 118 games, averaging 39.44 at a strike rate of 138.71. He has four centuries and 26 fifties to his credit and came tantalisingly close to breaking Virat Kohli's record of most runs in a single edition in 2023.
His outing in 2023 was just the kind of season every batter in the IPL dreams of. Shubman racked up 890 runs in 17 games at 59.33 while striking at 159.80 and also registered three centuries and four half-centuries. However, despite his captivating run, Gujarat Titans stumbled at the final hurdle and lost to Chennai Super Kings by five wickets.

Compared to the IPL, Shubman's Test resume is still a work in progress, but India's latest appointee in the red-ball format is willing to put his nose to the grindstone to be among the best.
While he had aggregated 1893 runs at 35.05 in 32 Tests before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, including five tons and seven half-centuries, the added responsibility as captain saw him rewrite history books in England.
Scoring 754 runs at 75.40 across five Tests, laced with four hundreds, Shubman shattered Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing record for accumulating the most runs by an India captain in a bilateral series. He has already aggregated 2843 runs in 40 Tests at 43.07 with the help of 10 hundreds and eight fifties, and promises to clinch the ICC World Test Championship that has eluded India thus far.
