Suryakumar Yadav’s days as India’s T20I captain are numbered as the selection committee is reportedly in discussion to replace him with the Men in Blue set to begin a new cycle in the shortest format. Suryakumar recently etched his name in the history books, guiding India to a successful defence of their T20 World Cup title on home soil.
As a result, India became the first team to defend their T20 World Cup crown and also to win the trophy on home soil. However, despite a successful campaign, the India skipper will have to vacate his leadership position with Shreyas Iyer being the frontrunner to replace him.

With Suryakumar at the helm, India reached unprecedented heights in T20Is, remaining unbeaten across both bilateral and multi-national tournaments. He made his captaincy debut against Australia in November 2023, filling in place of injured Hardik Pandya and guided India to a 4-1 series victory.
He further led the Men in Blue to a 1-1 series draw against South Africa, which remains the only drawn series under his leadership. Suryakumar was finally handed over the full-time captaincy of India’s T20I side following Rohit Sharma’s retirement after the T20 World Cup 2024.
And thus began a golden era of India's T20I domination where Suryakumar Yadav guided the team to nine consecutive series/tournament victories, finishing at the T20 World Cup 2026 on home soil. Courtesy of his marvellous run as skipper, the 35-year-old holds the record for having the highest win percentage in T20Is (80.76%) among full-member nations.
Under Suryakumar’s captaincy, India batted at a tempo unmatched by the rest of the world, scoring at 10.04 runs per over since July 2024 until the end of the T20 World Cup 2026. The team also broke several other records en route to a myriad of memorable victories. Here's a complete recap of Suryakumar Yadav's record as India's T20I captain:
