The Indian Premier League (IPL) is renowned for its competitiveness, not only because of the quality of players but also due to the demanding schedule that requires teams to balance home advantage with the challenge of playing away.

Winning at home often comes easier thanks to familiarity with conditions, but success away from home is the true test of adaptability. This season, several teams have faltered in that regard, failing to acclimatise to away venues and paying the price in the playoff race.

1. Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants have been the most underwhelming side on the road this season. Out of seven away fixtures, they managed just two wins while suffering five defeats. Their first away victory came on April 5 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, where they beat SRH by five wickets.

The second arrived at Eden Gardens on April 9, when they edged past KKR in a last‑ball thriller. With only two wins in seven attempts, LSG’s away win percentage stands at 28.6%, a figure that highlights their inability to consistently perform outside Lucknow.

2. Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings have endured a miserable run away from home. They have played six away matches so far, winning only two and losing four, with one more fixture left against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Their two victories came against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede on April 23 and Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 5. With two wins in six outings, CSK’s away win percentage is 33.3%, reflecting their struggles to replicate their home success in unfamiliar conditions.

3. Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians’ poor away record has been a major factor in their early exit from the playoff race. They have won just two of their six away games this season. Their first triumph came in Ahmedabad against Gujarat Titans on April 20, where they secured a commanding 99‑run victory. The second was against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on May 14.

With two wins from six matches, MI’s away win percentage is 33.3%, underlining their inconsistency and inability to adapt when playing outside Wankhede.

These numbers show how crucial adaptability is in the IPL. While home advantage can provide comfort, the ability to win away from familiar conditions often separates playoff contenders from those left behind. For LSG, CSK, and MI, their poor away records have been a decisive factor in shaping their campaigns.
