The Indian Premier League is touted as the most competitive T20 tournament around the world, with the best talent from all across the globe competing in the event. Teams have to be at the top of the game throughout the course of the 40 overs in order to end up on the winning side as any lapses often lead to the game slipping away.
Over the years, several teams have dominated seasons after seasons in the IPL, sealing their spot in the top two spots more often than not. However, there have been a few teams who’ve finished with a wooden spoon several times, having their worst season ever. Here’s a look at five such teams, with the least number of victories in an IPL season:

1. Delhi Daredevils (2014, 2 wins)
Led by Kevin Pietersen, Delhi had a decent start to the season, winning two out of the first five matches. However, they ended up losing the remaining nine matches to finish at the bottom of the table with four points from 14 games, having a net run rate of -1.182.
2. Deccan Chargers (2008, 2 wins)
The winners of the second season of the IPL had a horrendous beginning in the tournament, finishing last in the inaugural season in 2008. Deccan registered their first win in the fourth fixture under the leadership of VVS Laxman. Their only other victory of the season came under Adm Gilchrist’s captaincy in the seventh game. From then on, they ended up losing seven matches on the trot, finishing the tournament with just two wins from 14 games with a net run rate of -0.467.
3. Delhi Daredevils (2013, 3 wins)
After finishing on top of the points table in 2012, Delhi had a horrendous campaign, as they could only register 3 wins in the 2013 edition. Led by Mahela Jayawardene, the side failed to emulate the highs of the previous season, finishing last (ninth) on the points table with six points from 16 matches, with a net run rate of -0.848.
4. Kings XI Punjab (2015, 3 wins)
After their maiden appearance in the final in 2014, not many expected Punjab to finish last in the following season. Under the leadership of Virender Sehwag and George Bailey, Punjab registered three wins in the season, out of which one came through a super over. They finished last with 3 wins from 14 matches, having a net run rate of -1.436.
5. Sunrisers Hyderabad (2021, 3 wins)
Under the leadership of David Warner and Kane Williamson, SRH had their worst-ever campaign in 2021, as they could register only three victories in the season. As a result, SRH finished last with six points from 14 matches, having a net run rate of -0.545.
Note: Kolkata Knight Riders (2009) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2017) have also finished IPL seasons with just three victories.
