The ODI World Cup 2027 is less than a year away, and teams have entered the final phase of their preparations as they look to finalise combinations and devise strategies that could bring success in southern Africa.

The marquee tournament will feature some of the biggest names in world cricket, while several long-standing records could also come under threat. Here are five World Cup records that might be broken during the 2027 edition:

#1 Highest team total in ODI World Cup history

South Africa currently hold the record for the highest team total in ODI World Cup history. The Proteas amassed 428/5 against Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi during the 2023 World Cup. Centuries from Quinton de Kock (100), Rassie van der Dussen (108) and Aiden Markram (106) powered South Africa to the mammoth score.

Should the South African venues live up to their reputation as high-scoring grounds, aided by the altitude at certain venues, this record could well be surpassed, particularly if one of the leading cricketing nations comes up against an Associate side.

#2 Most wins by a team in a single ODI World Cup edition

Australia hold the record for the most wins in a single ODI World Cup campaign, having won all 11 of their matches en route to the title in 2003.

With teams set to play more matches under the current format, a side that goes unbeaten throughout the tournament could register 13 victories, while even a team that suffers just one defeat could finish with 12 wins, enough to surpass Australia's record.

#3 Highest match aggregate in an ODI World Cup match

The clash between Australia and New Zealand during the 2023 ODI World Cup produced a staggering 771 runs, the highest aggregate in a World Cup match. Australia posted 388 in 49.2 overs, thanks largely to Travis Head's explosive 109 off 67 deliveries. New Zealand mounted a spirited chase but fell short by just five runs.

If batting-friendly surfaces dominate proceedings in 2027 and the top teams make the most of them, this record could be under serious threat.

#4 Biggest win by runs in an ODI World Cup match

Australia currently own the record for the largest victory margin by runs in ODI World Cup history after defeating the Netherlands by 309 runs in 2023. Batting first, Australia piled up 399/8 before dismissing the Dutch for just 90 in 21 overs.

A similarly one-sided contest could emerge if one of the stronger teams encounters a relatively weaker qualifier during the group stage, putting this record within reach.

#5 Most sixes by a team in an innings of an ODI World Cup match

England hold the record for the most sixes hit by a team in a World Cup innings, smashing 25 maximums against Afghanistan during the 2019 edition.

Given the evolution of power-hitting, coupled with the possibility of flat pitches and altitude-assisted conditions in South Africa, this record could be vulnerable. Venues such as the Wanderers and Centurion may provide the ideal setting for a six-hitting frenzy.
