A chastening seven‑wicket defeat to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 59 has thrown a spanner in Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) IPL 2026 playoff qualification campaign.
CSK entered the contest riding a three‑match winning streak, having even beaten LSG in their earlier meeting. But a lacklustre batting display meant they could only muster 187 for five. On a placid surface at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, that total was far from par.

LSG’s chase, completed with 20 balls to spare, underlined just how inadequate CSK’s effort was. The setback leaves the five‑time champions sixth on the points table, wedged between the top five and the bottom four. With 12 points from 12 games (six wins, six losses) and a net run rate of 0.027, CSK’s destiny is no longer in their own hands.
How can CSK still qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs?
- If CSK win both their remaining fixtures, they will finish on 16 points. Even then, they must hope Punjab Kings (PBKS) lose at least one of their two remaining matches, and Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffer at least two defeats in their last three outings.
- If CSK manage only one win, they will end with 14 points. In that scenario, they must rely on PBKS and RR losing all their remaining games, while Delhi Capitals (DC) also suffer defeat in their final league clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 24 at Eden Gardens.
CSK’s playoff equation is now a complex web of permutations and combinations. Their fate depends not only on their own performances but also on how the other teams perform.
