Delhi Capitals had a golden opportunity to shed their perennial underachiever tag this IPL season. Instead, they have stumbled at crucial junctures, conceding games they ought to have closed out.

Take match No. 14 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium for instance: chasing 211 against Gujarat Titans, Delhi had the contest by the scruff of the neck before an indecision involving David Miller cost them two vital points. They lost by a solitary run.

Then in match No. 35, Delhi posted a monumental 264, a total never scaled before in T20 cricket. Yet poor catching and misfielding proved fatal as Punjab Kings hunted it down with seven balls to spare. Had Delhi won even those two fixtures, they would now be sitting pretty on 14 points, with playoff qualification a far simpler equation.

Delhi’s playoff qualification scenario

Delhi have now entered must‑win territory. With two matches left against Rajasthan Royals in Delhi on Sunday, May 17, and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata on Sunday, May 24, victories in both will take them to a maximum of 14 points.

But even that won’t be enough in isolation. Their fate hinges on several other results:

  • All four of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Gujarat Titans (GT), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) must lose all of their remaining games.

  • Both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) need to drop at least two of their remaining fixtures.

Only if this improbable sequence unfolds, alongside Delhi winning their last two matches, can they book a playoff berth. A single defeat in their remaining games will slam the door shut on their season.

Delhi Capitals’ campaign is now balanced on a knife-edge. Missed opportunities have left them chasing permutations. Their path to the playoffs is mathematically alive but practically precarious, dependent on a host of results elsewhere.
