Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are walking a tightrope in the race for the IPL 2026 playoffs. With two league games left, they sit on 11 points and face a daunting challenge to secure qualification.
Their next fixture is against Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on Thursday, April 20. Mumbai have historically dominated this rivalry, winning 25 of the 36 meetings between the two sides. Earlier this season, MI also defeated KKR at the Wankhede Stadium, which adds to the psychological edge they carry into this clash.

KKR’s problems are compounded by the return of Hardik Pandya to full fitness and the availability of Suryakumar Yadav. Hardik had missed recent matches due to fitness concerns, but now looks fit as he trained extensively with his teammates ahead of the game.
His presence, along with Suryakumar and Jasprit Bumrah, strengthens Mumbai considerably. On the other hand, KKR face uncertainty over Matheesha Pathirana, who suffered a hamstring injury in the previous game. His absence would be a significant blow to their bowling attack.
The situation has become even more complicated after Rajasthan Royals’ victory over Lucknow Super Giants in Match 64 at Jaipur. That result has tightened the playoff race and left KKR with little margin for error.
KKR’s playoff equation after RR’s win over LSG
For KKR to qualify, they must first beat Mumbai Indians, which would take them to 13 points. They would then need to defeat Delhi Capitals in their final league game on Sunday, May 24, at Eden Gardens. Two wins would lift them to 15 points, but their fate would still depend on other results.
KKR must hope that Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals in their next game, ensuring Rajasthan finish with only 14 points. In addition, they need Lucknow Super Giants to pip Punjab Kings on May 23. Punjab currently have 13 points and can also reach 15. If both KKR and PBKS finish on 15 points, the qualification will be decided by net run rate (NRR).
However, if Rajasthan and Punjab both lose their final fixtures while KKR win their remaining two matches, then KKR will secure the fourth playoff spot outright.
