SA vs AFG, 13th Match, Group D - Live Commentary

ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2026 11, Feb 2026, 09:30 AM Narendra Modi Stadium

That brings us to an end of the live coverage of this stunning, dramatic, fantastic, incredible match. What a game of cricket it's been. No team deserved to lose this, but it's South Africa who get the points, while Afghanistan will ponder the what-ifs.

Aiden Markram: It's quite hard to sum it all up. Tough competition, teams put you under immense pressure. When you start putting yourself under pressure you make it more difficult. Ultimately grateful for the win and the points. In Super Overs you pick your most confident guys. Lungi didn't miss by much in that first Super Over but they still got a good total, shows you small margins. Same story with Keshav. Tough being a spinner but we still backed him to get the job done for us. I said to the boys at the innings break that 187 is a decent total but we're going to have to scrap and field well. We can add 10-15 through good fielding. But there's areas we can improve in too. It does make you believe you can pull off a win from anywhere. You need to win close games in this competition.

Rashid Khan: The boys did an amazing job, especially with the way they started with the batting. To restrict them to less than 190 was fantastic. Unlucky to be part of the losing team but we have given everything on the ground. This pitch is good, we played a lot here in the IPL and the average score is 190-195. They had a great start but the discussion was to restrict them. Amazing innings by Gurbaz, that's what he's famous for. He played amazing in the last Super Over also, three sixes. We had our opportunities, we needed to be smarter in batting, or one good ball to finish the game. Hopefully we keep that energy and come back. It is pretty hard, it is quite disappointing. You work for one and a half years. Not the ideal start, but we'll try our best possible. Anytime you play for your country, it's a moment of pride.

Lungi Ngidi is the Man of the Match: I've lost so much weight today, I've never been that stressed in my life in a cricket game! But happy to come out on the winning side. I knew I was probably going to be the option in the Super Over.

I let myself down in my first over, leaked a few runs. So I went back to what has been working for me in the last couple of months, so the slower ball came into play. In the end, I'm kind of smiling.

The captain said it was going to be a scrap, I didn't know it was going to be that much of a scrap. Two Super Overs, no one was expecting that. We had to make sure we were clinical in the field.

South Africa win the game in the second Super Over. Drama to end all drama. This is the magic of sport. This is what the game can do. South Africa made what they thought was a winning total in 187/6. Afghanistan should have been all out in 19.1 overs but Rabada overstepped, and Noor Ahmad showed unexpected batting chops as the game was tied.

Then Afghanistan thought they had done enough by getting 17 in the Super Over. South Africa needed a last-ball six to tie that. Then they came out and blasted 23 runs. Afghanistan had no runs in the first two balls and then Gurbaz, the best batter on show on both sides, hit three consecutive sixes. He couldn't repeat a Carlos Brathwaite with a fourth though, so it ends in agony for Afghanistan. Ecstasy (and lots of relief) for South AFrica.

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The fairytale is over! Gurbaz was looking to steer it for the game-tying four, ends up spooning it to point for a catch. This might be the greatest game the T20 World Cup has ever seen. And it ends with South Africa squeaking through by the skin of their fingernails.

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 1 wide. Pressure pressure pressure. Maharaj bowls it way outside off so it's a wide.

Now a four will tie the game.

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Six. Oh my word!!!

Gurbaz has hit three sixes in a row. This one was full outside off, and he just had a free swing of it through the line to send it over deep midwicket.

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Six. And he clears Marco Jansen at long-on!! This is just incredible. Can he actually do it? He needed four sixes when he came in off four balls. He's hit two in two.

Gurbaz needs to do it three more times.

Keshav Maharaj to Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Six. Why wasn't Gurbaz sent ahead of Nabi?! Flat bats a six straight over the bowler's head. Length ball on off, and he unleashed on it.

A massive 23 runs in the second Super Over by South Africa. Stubbs and Miller were awesome. You would have to think that's enough to seal a win, but this match had defied every prediction so far, and every expectation.

Who will bowl the second Super Over for South Africa? Marco Jansen? Kagiso Rabada? He might be the logical choice, but he had a horror last over in normal game-time.

You would assume that Gurbaz and Omarzai will bat for Afghanistan since they are both eligible, having not been dismissed in the first Super Over.

Surprise from both teams. It's Nabi and Gurbaz who are coming out to bat for Afghanistan. And South Africa have a curve-ball of their own, with Keshav Maharaj handed the ball for the second Super Over. Afghanistan need 24 runs to win. 23 to tie the second Super Over.
