The Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) is all set to begin on March 28 as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will clash against each other in the opening fixture. In the past 18 seasons of the tournament, the league has lived up to its reputation of giving the fans the top level of entertainment as several big names have graced the pitch.
Every year, IPL witnesses top batters fight amongst themselves to finish as the highest scorer of the season and win the coveted Orange Cap. Australia’s Shaun Marsh became the first winner of the award during the inaugural season in 2008 after scoring 616 runs from 11 matches for Kings XI Punjab.
On the other hand, legendary Sachin Tendulkar became the first Indian to win the award in 2010, having accumulated 618 runs from 15 matches for the Mumbai Indians (MI). West Indies legend Chris Gayle became the first player to breach the 700-run mark in a single season and also to win successive Orange Cap awards, after scoring 733 runs from 14 matches in the 2012 season.
Star India batter Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs in a single season, having plundered a whopping 973 runs from 16 innings during the 2016 edition. Meanwhile, former Australia batter David Warner is the only player to have won the Orange Cap three times in IPL history in seasons 2015, 2017 and 2019 respectively.
As another season of IPL draws close, here’s a look at all the Orange Cap winners from the previous 18 editions of the tournament:
