In the rich history of cricket, there have been several players who’ve left an indelible mark on the game with their stupendous performances. They are long remembered even after their retirements as the world celebrates their remarkable careers.
While many players continue to live a long life after their cricketing days are over, some meet an unfortunate end in road accidents. Here are three cricketers who lost their lives to road accidents:
1. Andrew Symonds
Symonds was an integral part of the Australian side in the 2000s, having played several memorable knocks for his team across formats. He announced his retirement in February 2012, having played 26 Tests, 198 ODIs and 14 T20Is for Australia.
However, his life came to a tragic end as he died in a car accident in Queensland. Symonds was 46 when he was involved in an accident outside Townsville, where he lived in retirement.
2. Runako Morton
Runako Morton made his debut for West Indies in 2002 during an ODI against Pakistan. He played 15 Tests, 56 ODIs and seven T20Is in his career. However, Morton died young at the age of 33, following a car accident in Trinidad. He lost control of his vehicle while driving and was killed after crashing into a utility pole.
3. Manzarul Islam Rana
Islam was a left-arm spinner, and he made his debut for Bangladesh in 2003 against England in Chattogram. He played six Tests and 25 ODIs in his career and scalped 28 wickets in total. He was just 22 when he died in a road accident, becoming the youngest Test cricketer to die.
Manural Islam Rana was on a motorbike in Khulna when he lost his balance and collided with an oncoming bus.
