Cricket in India is often described as a religion, with cricketers revered as cult figures. Over the years, the game’s popularity has soared, elevating the stature of players across the country. The fandom Indian cricketers enjoy is unmatched, contributing not only to their wealth but also to their global brand value.

While most players remain focused on their cricketing careers, a few have ventured into football, investing heavily in clubs to both promote homegrown talent and make football a more rewarding career option in India. Their involvement ensures the sport retains its appeal for the next generation.

Here are three prominent Indian cricketers who co-own football clubs in the country:

1. MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni’s passion for football is well known. Before becoming India’s legendary wicketkeeper, he played as a goalkeeper during his school days. His love for the sport led him to co-own Chennaiyin FC, a Chennai-based Indian Super League (ISL) club that has been part of the competition since its inception in 2014.

Dhoni shares ownership with Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan and entrepreneur Vita Dani, who is also the co-founder of Ultimate Table Tennis. Chennaiyin FC have enjoyed success in the ISL, winning the title twice, in 2015 and 2017-18.

2. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli, an admirer of Cristiano Ronaldo, has also invested in Indian football. His passion for the sport drew him to the ISL, where he co-owns FC Goa. Kohli partners with Jaydev Mody, chairman of Delta Corp Limited, and entrepreneur Akshay Tandon.

Nicknamed the Gaurs, FC Goa are yet to clinch the ISL title but have come close on multiple occasions. They finished runners-up twice, losing to Chennaiyin FC in 2015 and Bengaluru FC in 2018-19.

3. Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson, India’s wicketkeeper-batter, is another cricketer who has invested in football. Known for his polarising presence in cricket, Samson’s popularity extends far beyond the pitch. He is the co-owner of Malappuram FC, a Super League Kerala side.

Samson shares ownership with V A Ajmal Bismi, Dr Anvar Ameen Chelat, and Baby Neelambra, all of whom are committed to strengthening football in Kerala.
