India have hit a new low in T20Is after suffering a 4‑0 drubbing at the hands of England. The defeat not only pushed them down to No. 2 in the ICC Men’s T20I team rankings but also crowned England as the new No. 1 side in the world.

Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, has joined an unwanted club that includes Elton Chigumbura, Thisara Perera and Brendan Taylor, all of whom went winless in their first seven T20Is as captains. India’s fielding woes compounded their misery, with five dropped catches out of 13 opportunities, resulting in a catching efficiency of just 72.2%. Those lapses proved costly throughout the series.

#1 4‑0 series loss to England (2026)

The humiliation against England stands as India’s worst-ever performance in a T20I campaign. Never before had India lost four matches in a single series or tournament.

#2 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009 (England)

India entered the 2009 edition as defending champions, having lifted the inaugural trophy in South Africa in 2007. MS Dhoni’s men began brightly, beating Bangladesh by 25 runs and hammering Ireland by eight wickets.

But the momentum evaporated against stronger opposition. India lost to West Indies by seven wickets, suffered a heartbreaking three‑run defeat to the hosts, England, and then fell to South Africa by 12 runs. Three consecutive losses ended their title defence prematurely.

#3 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2010 (West Indies)

India’s 2010 campaign mirrored the disappointment of 2009. They started well, defeating Afghanistan by seven wickets and South Africa by 14 runs.

However, once again, the tide turned. India endured three straight defeats against Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka, crashing out of the tournament without reaching the knockout stage.

#4 India’s tour of the Caribbean (2023)

Before their recent 2‑0 humiliation in Ireland, India’s last bilateral series defeat came in the Caribbean in 2023. West Indies raced to a 2‑0 lead, but India fought back to level the series 2‑2 and force a decider.
